Shabby Chic… the latest décor trend
With the popularity of DIY projects and Pinterest, people are seeking a more creative outlet to home décor. The top trend is Shabby Chic, where your grandmother’s furniture piece can be given new life.
Kim Davis, retired Deputy from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, began a furniture painting and refinishing business in which she also provides classes on her techniques.
Kim had been painting furniture for over 8 years for personal use, but once she started homeschooling her youngest daughter, she had more free time. That free time led to painting more furniture and selling those refinished pieces as well. However the garage was rapidly filling up with furniture projects.
Two months ago, Kim and her husband Ron found the perfect location that suited all their needs.
What the Davis’ needed was to have enough space for workshops, selling space and a nice roomy area for her husband to build farmhouse tables and rustic furniture.
“It worked out really great for us,” Kim said.
Kim Davis has so much energy and creativity to bring to these workshops, from beginners to advanced, there is something you can paint and create.
“I always wanted to do workshops. I always wanted to teach people how to paint. This area (Hernando County) doesn’t have places that teach people how to paint furniture,” Kim said.
As this new shabby chic trend has taken over, more people want to learn how to do this or that from ideas shared on the internet and in magazines. Although, Kim explained, that the knowledge on where to begin is lacking.
“They don’t know how to move forward with it. They see it, they love it and they don’t have the tools. They don’t have enough knowledge to move forward with it. We want to make you feel like you can,” Kim explained.
Ron Davis and their daughters also help out during these workshops which bring a family oriented feel and a comfortable fun environment.
“We have met a lot of really nice people and they are very complimentary of what we’ve done and it is very rewarding, I love it,” Kim said.
Not only can you learn at the workshops, but you can also buy pieces from baskets to doors that have been restyled into Shabby Chic. If you have a piece that you want to get restyled or don’t have time to do it yourself… just contact Kim Davis and she can help.
“If they feel that it is too big of a job for them to do to do … bring it to me and I do it for them,” Kim Davis said.
