January 26th, 2016 was a busy evening for law enforcement.

Around 4:30pm, the Sheriff’s department received several phone calls involving a home invasion in the Silverthorn gated community indicating there were two women injured. Further calls from residents in the area stated that one victim was seriously injured at the residence while the other was pursuing the suspect. The suspect was apprehended by authorities after he was spotted attempting to cross the Suncoast Parkway. The suspect was identified as Joseph Panarese.

Joseph Panarese

He was arrested by detectives, charged with Home Invasion Robbery with Weapon, Aggravated Battery with Deadly Weapon (2 counts). His bond was set at $150,000. Panarese sustained some injuries in his attempt to flee, so deputies brought him to Bayfront Health Brooksville. Panarese is expected to recover from his injuries and was transported to the Hernando County Jail.

While several Hernando County Sheriff’s deputies were inside the Emergency Department at Bayfront Health Brooksville with Joseph Panarese, a nurse entered one of the treatment rooms and began screaming. She discovered that the patient in the treatment room, William Adams, was suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound as stated by a Sheriff’s office report. It appears that Adams shot himself at the hospital.

Physicians and deputies rushed to the treatment room in an attempt to help, but Adams died soon after.

Deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office notified next of kin.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office investigation revealed that the patient, William Adams, was transported to Bayfront Health Brooksville after being involved in a traffic crash at U.S.-41 and Powell Road in Brooksville. The Florida Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation. Highway Patrol Officers found a large amount of hydrocodone and other pills in Adams’ possession.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office will continue to handle the Death Investigation, and the Florida Highway Patrol will continue to handle the crash investigation.

Both investigations are active.
