The School House that isn’t!
This intriguing building has a façade outer appearance of a quaint little school house but when you open the doors; it’s a book lover’s dream.
There is a huge variety of books for all readers’ interest, from romance to children’s books.
This Spring Hill location was originally home of the Deltona Corporation formed by the Mackle brothers, started in Spring Hill back in 1967, this was their sales office.
Traditional books as well as books on cd and movies are donated to the schoolhouse by the community. Some books have been weeded out from the library as well. The proceeds from donation sales go back to the library systems for programs and other needs.
“I love books and love to read… I have all the equipment; I have the tablet, a kindle… I still like a book in my hand,” Betty Geentiens said. Geentiens has been President of the Friends of the Library and involved in its management since 1983.
So what’s big about this… everything if you ask any book reader. There is a different connection to holding a book whether it is in paperback or hardback, it doesn’t matter. It’s the feeling of turning the page. Books can be fresh off the press or aged with all the words preserved to open your imagination.
The bookstore relies on volunteers to help keep it running smoothly and organized.
“Most of the time people that walk through those doors are people looking for books, the next thing you know we can talk them into volunteering because we do give perks for volunteers; they get the chance to see the books first. They can volunteer 2 hours a week,” Geentiens said.
For some, being around books opens a world of imaginative opportunity. It can take you anywhere from castles in Scotland to unknown worlds. You can step into those characters the author writes and become a superhero or be advisor to the President.
There is a great collection of free books as well as books that sell for just 10 cents.
“Having a place like this is heaven on earth. This is what I call my happy place, this is my comfort zone,” Lili Booth said. Booth has been volunteering at the Red school house for thirty years.
Once you open your book, feel the pages and let your adventure begin.
