Assistant County Administrator Russ Wetherington led a discussion February 23, 2016 about the condition of Veteran’s Memorial Park on Spring Hill Drive. He stated it has been “overlooked for some time” and his office is attempting to help the Parks and Recreation Department upgrade some of the facilities.
Mr. Wetherington stated that the steps should be replaced with a ramp in order to comply with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) regulations. The memorial section of the park also needs care to honor the sacrifice of those who have served our country. Mr. Wetherington stated the first step will be to design the upgrades and any changes. Other discussions on fundraising and brick pavers will follow.
Commissioner Diane Rowden introduced John Gauthier, a U.S. Navy veteran and President of the Timber Pines Veterans Club. Mr. Gauthier also holds the position of Reunion Planner for the U.S.S. Northampton. Mr. Gauthier compared the Hernando County Veteran’s Memorial Park with others he has seen in various communities over the past five years. He stated there are two main issues to be corrected: access to the memorial section, which he described as “horrendous if you are in a wheelchair or walker” and the inadequate tribute to veterans.
Mr. Gauthier stated he approached the Veterans Club last year about creating a memorial. Under his leadership, they were able to complete a memorial which honors all veterans and displays the medallions from each branch of the military as well as one for POWs. He presented a picture of the monument, and stated they were able to complete the project in less than a year and under $20,000. Mr. Gauthier made a request on behalf of the 20,000 veterans of Hernando County that the commissioners consider upgrading the park.
U.S. Congressman Richard Nugent was invited to share his opinion. At the time Veteran’s Memorial Park was built, Mr. Nugent served as sheriff. He remembered feeling proud when the park opened, but he said, “We build something, then we forget about it.” Hernando County does honor veterans, but when compared to the other counties in the district, Mr. Nugent stated, “We’re probably the most lacking in regards to our tribute to our veterans.”
