A Wawa convenience store is opening here in Hernando County on December 17th. The upscale convenience store is located on the corner of 50 and Mariner in Cortez Commons (12984 Cortez Blvd). The opening of a new Wawa generates a lot of excitement. The initial store opening in Orlando in 2012 had many dignitaries in attendance including the Governor Rick Scott.
Wawa’s parent company began as an iron foundry in 1803, in New Jersey. Nearly 100 years later, the owner of the company George Wood began a dairy farm and dairy processing plant in Wawa, PA. Their logo is a goose because the Native American word Wawa means Canada goose. With the demise of the milk man, George’s grandson Grahame Wood decided to build a food market in 1964 in order to sell their dairy products.
Today they offer a variety of beverages including cappuccinos, smoothies, lattes and milk shakes. They are well known for their hoagies, which are built to order. They serve a wide variety of breakfast and lunch fare. They sell over 6000 grocery store type items.
The company has opened 61 stores in Florida since the first Florida store opened in Orlando in 2012. That same year Wawa made national news as 2012 presidential hopeful Mitt Romney visited a couple of Wawas while campaigning in Pennsylvania.
Until December 27th, Wawa will be giving away free coffee in celebration of their new store. At the opening, starting at 8AM on December 17th, there will be a variety of festivities, giveaways and special deals. Wally Goose will be available for photo-ops.
